Perhaps most unsettling of all the viral threats is that of a lethal engineered virus released by a terror group. Such an event has been noted to be more likely than a nuclear threat because an engineered virus can be inexpensive to produce, the technical expertise is published, and the product is easy to conceal and transmit. Such an engineered virus passed human to human could be catastrophic.

In addition, already existing, naturally occurring viruses, such as small pox and Ebola could be in the hands of terrorists or obtained in the future. The need for proactive treatments is urgent.

Currently, the only answer to these bioterror threats is to make vaccines to what we know exists or hope current antiviral drugs have some effectiveness against these unknowable viruses. This is clearly inadequate. Large markets exist for new antiviral answers that would be stockpiled by governments. Indeed, countries are also actively funding the development of new solutions.
